Bipolar I is a mental illness that manifests itself in the form of mania—behavior where the extremes of being hyper energetic and feelings of euphoria “crash” into feelings of negativity, low energy, self-esteem; it is then met by its evil twin, deep depression, a deep negative emotion following mania that leads to suicide ideations and thoughts of death. It’s known as mania’s evil twin because it inevitably follows an episode of mania. When I did not know it, as a person who was undiagnosed, I would vacillate between episodes of mania and deep depression. The term4 manic depression stems from this cycle. Mania can cause you to do unsafe things and then spiral into deep depression.
